I am a regular customer of the Jewel on Touhy Ave. in Niles. You have a fantastic employee there in the
produce department named John. He is an absolute font of knowledge and is quite engaging and helpful. Niles
This morning between the gym and work, I stopped by to pick up a few things. During that time I had
another one of the many interactions I’ve had with John over the last year or two. This is actually quite
typical and not the exception.
While he was helping me in selecting apples, I was also picking up a couple of acorn squashes and a
spaghetti squash. John asked, “ Why aren’t you buying a butternut squash as well”. I replied that I knew
how to cook the others and the probability of a successful outcome was higher. He proceeded to provide
me with a recipe and instructions for cooking a butternut squash that included genuine maple syrup and
pieces of apple. Needless to say, I bought the butternut squash and it is now on the menu for Sunday’s
dinner. As an aside, John is also a master gardener and we’ve had occasion to discuss that briefly as well. It
certainly shows in his passion and depth of knowledge about the produce.
We have been doing more of our grocery shopping at Jewel of late than we had been for quite a few
years. For the most part, and understandably so, grocery shopping has become an experience that has
less and less personal interaction. When I have had those encounters at this particular Jewel , they have all
been positive including some stellar “senior” lady cashiers. John however has stood out and I thought
deserved at the very least a quick email.
