P. 23
Giving God one-tenth of his money became a habit for
Charles. Soon, God started to speak to Charles about what he
should do with the other nine-tenths of his money. There was
so much God could do with the money if Charles didn’t keep it
for himself. He could give the money to other missionaries or
give it to help people in other countries who had nothing.
Charles felt that he could give God even more of his money.
He thought to himself, What if I keep just what I need to buy
food and clothes and pay the bills? How much can I live
without?
Verses from the Bible confirmed this for him. In Matthew
6:20, he read Jesus’ words, “Store your treasures in heaven,
where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break
in and steal.” He knew God was telling him to use his money
to help build His kingdom.
After Charles made changes to the way he dealt with his
money, he focused on where he could serve God. Charles
found a map of the world. He put it up on his wall and began to
ask God where he and Lettie would go. The world map became
his prayer book.
Every day, Charles read his Bible to hear what God wanted
to tell him. Charles talked to God in prayer like he would speak
to a friend. He also began to take classes and learn more at a
Bible school. For six years, he studied the Bible and learned
how to help people become Christians.
God would soon let Charles and Lettie know where He
wanted them to live. They would have had enough money to
pay for all their own expenses, but they had given it all away!
How would they buy their food and find a place to live in the
new country? Could they really trust God to give them what
they needed?
