The ghosts of Deadwood, South Dakota
On December 6, 1877, Kitty LeRoy was shot and killed by her jealous husband, Samuel Curley. Curley then shot and killed himself.
In an article dated January 16, 1878, the Black Hills Daily Times was already reporting haunted spirits and spooky sites at the Lone Star
building, the site of the double killing.
As a result of this double killing, a Black Hills Daily Times article dated Jan. 16, 1878, reported a haunting taking place in the Lone Star building.
This was just the start of ghostly happenings in Deadwood. Even though Halloween just passed, we’ve included a selection of ghost stories from
Deadwood to entertain you—and prepare you—for your trip next summer.
The Siever Street ghost
In October 1888, the Black Hills Daily Times reported that several Chinese immigrants living near the Deadwood Street Bridge had seen the ghost of a woman, taking on the form of a goose. The residents of the neighborhood placed slices of apples on their doorsteps to appease the spirit. Others in the area reported this same ghost speaking, demanding to be fed. Since Deadwood was only established in 1876, these are the rst ghost hunters on record in the town.
Wild Bill Hickock and Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon
James “Wild Bill” Hickok was killed in the original location of Nuttal & Mann’s, which was later renamed to No. 10 Saloon, so it isn’t that surprising that claims of paranormal activity continue to this day—even though the building’s changed location. Claims include
employees hearing footsteps walking on the second oor and employees being shoved. One employee claimed to smell perfume; some employees refuse to enter the second oor because of the strange feelings they have; and at least one employee has seen an apparition of a small child.
The Fairmont Hotel
Claims of ghostly activity on the third oor over the Fairmont Hotel have continued since at least 1907. On August 28 of that year, a young woman named Maggie Broadwater, jumped from a third-story
window. Also in 1907, Prentice Bernard, in a jealous rage, shot and killed the client of his girlfriend. In the process of shoving the pistol in his
pants, the gun went off, wounding him. Bernard ran from the hotel where he collapsed and died. Several who have slept in the room report seeing
a woman with red hair and a green dress standing at the foot of the bed watching them. Many people also claim to have the feeling that someone is running past them on the stairs.
