               MAJOR	CAUSES	of	CYBERBULLYING
                   1.  Anonymity	–	Gives	the	perpetrators	a	sense	of	false	security.	It	also	gives	cour-
                      age	to	say	things	that	they	wouldn’t	in	real	life.
                   2.  Diff.	in	tracking	the	attacker	–	It’s	difficult	to	identify	and	trace	the	perpetrator
                      as	it	happens	online
                   3.  Peer	pressure	–	to	be	accepted	by	their	friends
                   4.  Social	 acceptance	 –	 Some	 students	 consider	 cyberbullying	 socially	 acceptable
                      and	COOL!
                   5.  Need	for	power	–	students	use	cyberbullying	as	a	symbol	of	power	and	abuse
                   6.  Lack	 of	 awareness	 –	 Some	 students	 don’t	 understand	 the	 consequences	 of
                      cyberbullying	and	think	about	it	as	a	joke.
                   7.  Anger	/	frustration	–	Some	students	use	cyberbullying	to	vent	their	frustration
                      and	anger	on	others	as	a	way	to	get	out	of	their	own	problems	and	sorrows.
                   8.  Low	self-esteem	–	Students	with	mental	illness	or	from	troubled	families	cyber
                      bully	others	to	gain	self-esteem.

               EFFECTS	of	CYBERBULLYING
                   1.  Extreme	stress	–	Victims	feel	overwhelmed	while	dealing	with	bullies	and	this
                      causes	extreme	stress.
                   2.  Increased	 fear	 and	 paranoia	 –	 Victims	 may	 find	 it	 difficult	 to	 feel	 safe	 any-
                      where,	cause	internet	finds	them	wherever	they	are.	This	may	create	a	paranoid
                      fear	on	victim’s	psychology.
                   3.  Humiliation	–	Victims	face	constant	humiliation	as	the	harassment	is	available
                      for	their	peers	to	view	and	share
                   4.  Anger	–	Sometimes	victims	take	out	their	humiliation	and	anger	on	other	stu-
                      dents	online.
                   5.  Isolation	&	Loneliness	–	In	the	absence	of	guidance	or	support	from	a	trusted
                      form	of	authority	victims	can	feel	isolated	and	lonely.
                   6.  Physical	Illness	–	Extreme	stress	or	fear	can	also	result	in	physical	illnesses	such
                      as	head/stomach	aches,	or	fever.
                   7.  Psychological	Issues	–	Victims	of	cyber	bullying	may	develop	psychological	is-
                      sues	that	could	have	long	term	effects	on	their	lives.

               WHAT	CAN	SCHOOLS	DO?
                   1.  Teach	digital	citizenship	and	create	digital	citizens
                   2.  Discuss	bullying
                   3.  Reinforce	empathy,	respect	and	tolerance
                   4.  Educate	students	and	parents	alike
                   5.  Remind	your	students	the	internet	is	public	and	permanent
                   6.  Teach:	It’s	OKAY	to	report	abuse!
