2 Screech Speech
Activities targeted to help your child identify Screech Speech and to shift unhelpful thoughts.
Talk Out Loud (all ages) Time: 1-2minutes
Purpose: To model helpful self-talk OR to model how to identify and shift unhelpful thinking patterns.
Instructions: Talk out loud! Model helpful self-talk so your child hears you. If (when) you use unhelpful self-talk, model for them how to identify it and shift it!
Yet (all ages)
Time: 1-3minutes
Purpose: This helps build your child’s confidence and employ helpful self-talk.
Instructions: When your child says they can’t do something always add “yet.” Help them understand that although they may not be able to do it today, they just haven’t learned it yet. Encourage them to keep working and think flexibly. This way they no longer have to see themselves in such a black/white view but instead help them stay in the gray. Anything is possible.
Bad Moments vs. Bad Days (all ages)
Time: Varies
Purpose: To help your child shift unhelpful language and focus on helpful thinking patterns.
Instructions: When your child comes to you about having a bad day, help break that down. Rarely is it an entire bad day. Most often it is about a bad moment or event. Allow them to vent about their difficulty. Validate their emotions. Once they are done help them identify other moments in the day which weren’t as difficult. Help them understand that the entire day wasn’t all bad.
Make sure you model this language at home as well. One difficult/trying experience does not have to define your whole day.
