Perspective Taking (5+)
Time: 2-5minutes
Purpose: To develop empathy and the ability to think outside of one’s self.
Instructions: Have your child tell a story. Then prompt them to tell the same story from someone else’s perspective. This can be make-believe or real.
Real: They tell a story about something that happened at school. Afterward, ask them to tell the same story from the teacher’s perspective.
Pretend: Tell a make-believe story. Then, ask your child to tell the same story from one of their favorite characters perspectives, or “How would dad tell the story?”
Tall Tales Story Telling Board Game is a great game for this. You can also buy storytelling cards by EeBoo.
Friendship Book (7+)
Time: 10-15minutes
Purpose: Work to develop interpersonal skills and empathy.
Explore not only what makes a good friend but also what choices/behaviors hinder friendships. Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to insert some good humor. This is a nonthreatening way to address unwanted behaviors and to help them think about how those behaviors negatively impact not only themselves, but also others.
Instructions: Create a book about the dos and don’ts of friendship. This can be a step-by-step,
how-to, or just a series of tips. It doesn’t need to be a book. It can be a list, a comic, a picture, or
 anything creative.
