Ordering Food (4+)
Time: 1-2minutes
Purpose: To develop assertive communication.
Instructions: It is just as it sounds. Have your child practice ordering their own food at restaurants or checking out with purchases at stores. Teach them how to make eye contact, how to speak up and to use their manners. You can practice this at home in role play before you work your way up to the real thing.
Thank You & No Thank You (4+)
Time: 3-5minutes
Purpose: To understand how to be assertive and how their tone of voice impacts their message.
Instructions: Say “No, thank you” in a variety of ways. Use different tones and body language to show your child how tone and body language can change a message. Once they get the hang of it, have them try it!
Mystery Objects (4+)
Time: 3-5minutes
Purpose: To develop assertive communication.
Instructions: Put 3-5 objects in a bag. Have your child choose an object without looking at it. Instruct them to describe the object and guess what it is without looking. Praise them for guessing, regardless of whether they are right or wrong. Explain how it takes courage and confidence to try something new.
Teacher Talks (5+)
Time: 3-5minutes
Purpose: To develop assertive communication.
Instructions: Have your child learn how to approach their teachers and coaches on their own. As they get older, slowly start to scale back on your help with this until your child is fully empowered to advocate for themselves. Teach your child to take advantage of help offered by teachers during office hours.
