Inner Pride (3+)
Time: 1-2minutes
Purpose: To help your child learn how to feel proud of their accomplishments and develop inner pride.
Instructions: After your child completes a task, pushes through a challenge, makes a hearty effort, makes a good choice, or experiences success, have them stop and feel proud. Ask them, “Do you feel proud of yourself?” External validation matters, but it is also important for them to develop their own inner validation.
Ask Questions (3+)
Time: 1-2minutes
Purpose: To help your child learn to trust their own judgment and to learn how to develop critical thinking skills.
Instructions: When your child asks you a question that you: A) Know they know the answer to,
B) Think they can figure out, or
C) Want them to think through,
Simply respond with your own question. i.e. “What do you think?” “Great question. What did I say last time?” “What would you do?” Encourage your child to answer regardless of whether or not they are correct.
You can also do this when they come to you with a problem. Ask them to think of some ways they might handle it and dialogue with them. Get in the habit of having your child be a part of the problem solving. As they continue to get better, scale back your intervention/advice.
Pride Chart (3+)
Time: 1-2minutesbutongoing
Purpose: To help your child learn how to feel proud of their accomplishments and develop inner pride.
Instructions: Get a piece of paper and stickers. Have your child hang the paper (they can decorate it if they would like) somewhere in their room. Have them choose a special spot for the stickers. Instruct them to put a sticker up each time they feel proud of themselves. See how many stickers they can get in a day, a week or a month. Discuss the pride chart after the set time is complete. Throughout the course of time discuss what it feels like to feel proud of yourself and how to celebrate big and little wins.
