Clean Up (all ages)
Time: 5-10minutesinitially.Oncetheyknowhowtocleanup,1-2minutesforfollowup.
Purpose: To help your child learn how to value their belongings and feel grateful for what they have. When kids are taught to take care of their things they value those items more.
Clean up teaches a lot of SEL skills, but I am choosing to put it in the gratitude category to highlight just one of the benefits.J
Instructions: Teach your child how to take care of their things at home. When they take pride in their things, they can better appreciate what they have.
Gratitude Tree (3+)
Time: 1-2minutes,butongoing
Purpose: To help your child learn how to develop and express gratitude.
Instructions: Make a gratitude tree at home. Write what you are grateful for on post-it notes until the tree is full.
Donate (4+)
Time: 10-15minutes
Purpose: To help your child learn how to value their belongings and feel grateful for what they have.
Instructions: Once or twice a year go through old toys and clothes. Have your child choose which toys/clothes to donate. Explain how they can be kind and share their blessings with others and how their loved toys and clothes will spread happiness to another child. You can also explain that this is kind to the Earth as well because we are producing less wasteJ
Gratitude Post-Its (4+)
Time: 2-5minutes
Purpose: To help your child learn how to develop and express gratitude.
Instructions: Place post-its in random places around your house. If your child can read, prompt them with questions. For nonreaders, or to keep it simple, put a heart on a post-it. Instruct your child that whenever they find a post-it with a heart they get to say something they are grateful for.
