FIRST DRAFT MULTI-SECTOR NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND ASSET MAPPING
Often there is some data already available on local needs assessments and asset mapping, e.g. Chamber of Commerce’s list of local businesses, City Geographic Information Systems’ maps, or Park and Recreation Department’s catalogues. Seek out what is already available in your area to inform a basic foundation of mapping resources. Community Colleges and Public Libraries are often engaged in useful local studies.
From the national scene, there are several excellent tools available to download data about a particular area. The following are examples, using the Kansas City Metro as the location. These tools can be used to gather critical data in your area.
Go beyond the standard data sets. Be careful to leverage your partnerships and broad representation to seek equitable, multi-cultural lens for bottom-up definitions of community needs and assets.
Asset mapping must be informed by a broad base of
local people, because the term “assets” comprises several
categories, only some of which are easily identified a

considered an ‘asset”. For example, in some neighborhoods, the arts and culture are embedded in day-programs for adults with disabilities, senior centers or non-arts-related community organizations, e.g. Park and Recreation facilities or facilities where religious groups congregate.

Mapping assets must take into account the specific community, language, history and other “hidden” assets that are housed in a-typical places, e.g. stories of elders, undocumented First-nation history, etc. For this reason, representatives from an intersection or multiple local sectors are needed.
