Americans for the Arts.org has been benchmarking the nonprofit arts and culture industry’s impact on the economy in Arts and Economic Prosperity (AEP) studies in 1994. Four more times since then, they have published updates, with the most recent AEP-5, which reported on 341 communities in rural, suburban, and urban areas with populations ranging 1,500 to 4 million.
• 113 cities
• 115 counties
• 81 multi city or multi county regions
• 20 statewide study areas
• 12 cultural districts
• 14,439 arts and cultural organizations and 212,691 of their
attendees
Economic impact measurements included:
• full-time equivalent jobs,
• resident household income,
• revenue to local and state governments
• industry expenditures and attendance.
“Even in a strong economy, some may perceive the arts as an
unaffordable luxury. Fortunately, this rigorous report offers evidence that the nonprofit arts industry provides not just cultural benefits to our communities, but also makes significant positive economic contributions to the nation’s financial well-being regardless of the overall state of the economy.” – President & CEO Jonathan Spector, The Conference Board
