 MOVEMENT KC/NEIGHBORBUILT
Neighborbuilt was founded in 2019 on one core belief: Neighborhoods don’t know how to rebuild themselves. The ‘a-ha’ led the company to develop a new system of real-estate development specifically for urban core neighborhoods experiencing
mass demolition or devastation, called Whole Neighborhood Development. Because rebuilding urban cores requires more than adding buildings and infrastructure, whole neighborhood development invests in an entire ecosystem to jumpstart a productive economy, develop community identity, and equip neighbors to rebuild. The firm powers a movement based on each neighborhood’s identity that recruits new residents and businesses while simultaneously developing the industry to physically rebuild property so it is attainable for people at all income levels.
With its South Vine development in the residential neighborhood surrounding Kansas City’s historic jazz district, MovementKC uplifts this jazz heritage and culture. It hosts several live music events among other social and community building events, and invites performing artists, entertainers, and culture-builders, especially those with neighborhood family or
cultural ties, to buy homes and relocate their creative businesses or organizations to the neighborhood.
In this development, Neighborbuilt is currently building 150 new homes, rehabbing an abandoned commercial property with a plan to create a space to pilot Black and Brown ideas, and planning for additional new commercial spaces.
