YBCA was founded in 1993 as the cultural anchor of San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens development, YBCA is using culture as an instrument for social change and reimagining the role an arts institution can play in the community it serves. Each year - more than half a million people participate in their programs at their downtown campus and throughout the community. As a hub of creative energy, the organization currently has a diverse funding base that includes earned revenue, local and county government funding, individuals, and corporate support.
Since 2013, YBCA has been under the leadership of CEO and President, Deborah Cullinan. Deborah is a nationally regarded arts and community development leader who has a proven ability to work at a systems level and also to bring the arts into impactful work that crosses sectors. Deborah has already been diligently working in the Kansas City region for over a year as a Kauffman Innovator-in-Residence and has had significant success in building trust and connecting Kansas City artists and leaders to national influencers and resources.
Penelope Douglas, the Chief Strategy and Revenue Officer at YBCA, is considered a pioneer in the community development and social impact investment fields and has decades of experience working on entrepreneurial systems.

CultureBank envisions a truly equitable world where community assets of all kinds are valued.
The CultureBank draws from the best attributes of community banks, social financiers, community development finance institutions (CDFIs) and creative placemaking.
They support a process for social impact investors to collaborate with artist entrepreneurs and artistic enterprises that are or can have an impact on improving community health and shared prosperity and recognizing the value of existing and often hidden assets in community.
CultureBank Process:
• Develop the ecosystem of artist entrepreneurs who build value in communities.
• Invest in artists to develop undervalued community assets that contribute to community health and wellbeing,
including food security and community safety.
• Invest productively and imaginatively through integrated capital.
• Produce compelling and replicable examples of artist entrepreneurs leveraging community change.

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is a private, nonpartisan foundation that works with communities in education and entrepreneurship to increase opportunities that allow all people to learn, to take risks, and to own their success.
