THE TOWN CRIER
Back to the Future?
The 1956 Pontiac Club de Mer was a concept car designed by
GM engineer Harley Earl and unveiled at the General Motors
Motorama in 1956 to celebrate GM's commitment to futuristic
design. The car showcased innovative styling, like a sleek, low-
profile body room for a large power plant. The prototype was
non-running and ordered destroyed in 1959. However Marty
Martino, who specializes in concept car recreations brought back
to life as a replica using the chassis and powertrain of a 1959
Pontiac. The recreation is powered by the 1959 Strato Streak
engine mated to the Jetaway Hydro-Matic 4-speed transmission.
The car took three years to build and was sold at a 2009 Barrett-
Jackson auction for $110,000.
For those who couldn’t wait the future vehicle the tricycle (left)
was a big reality check. Somehow it didn’t take off!
