At 65… You’ll want to take care of business during your
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). Your IEP is seven months
long. It starts three months before the month you turn 65
and ends three months after you turn 65. Make a point
of enrolling in Medicare and any additional insurance
you want to go along with it during the first three months
of your IEP if you want your coverage to start on the first
day of the month you turn 65. Remember, if you don’t
enroll when first eligible, you may incur a penalty when
you decide to sign up for benefits.
After 65… If you have health insurance through your
work, or through your spouse’s work, you may want to delay
signing up for Medicare Part B. You will be allowed to delay
Part B enrollment if your employer group health plan is based
on current employment (not COBRA or retiree coverage)
and there are 20 or more employees at your company. You
will be given a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to enroll in
Part B without being subject to a late enrollment penalty.
You can do this at any time while you are still working and
up to eight months after your employment ends. Check with
your HR department or SSA to be sure you qualify for this
SEP.
