General arrangement for a DC-powered MSROV.
the beam of a fiber into a graded index lens (GRIN) to pass through some medium (air or clear fluid) to another GRIN lens for reversing the process. The number of fiber optical paths determines the complexity of the joint. The smaller the number of optical paths passing through the FORJ (termed “passes”) (typically), the lower the loss of transmission due to increased simplicity as well as shortened optical path through the air or fluid medium. Figure 7.9 depicts the basic operation of a single-pass fiber FORJ while Figure 7.10 shows a multi-pass FORJ (the fiber “cells” can be extended to n number of cells) for multi-mode fiber. For the multi-pass single-mode FORJ, the optical path channeled through fiber is replaced with an optical path through air or fluid.
