Other design characteristics also affect the stability of the vehicle along the varying axes. The so-called aspect ratio (total mean length of the vehicle versus total mean width of the vehicle) will determine the vehicle’s hull stability (Figure 3.12), as will thruster placement (Figure 3.13).
Most attack submarine designers specify a 7:1 aspect ratio as the optimum for the maneuvering- to-stability ratio (Moore and Compton-Hall, 1987). For ROVs, the optimal aspect ratio and thruster placement will be dependent upon the anticipated top speed of the vehicle, along with the need to maneuver in confined spaces.
