Appendix III: CARGOES OF TWO OUTWARD BOUND EAST INDIAMEN
Below two examples are given of the composition of the cargoes of two VOC ships bound for Asia. In the VOC archives no invoices of cargoes are present, but for quite a number of years the cargoes of outward bound ships can be reconstructed from information sent from Batavia. For the seventeenth century the so-called Bevindingen op de generale eysch can be used, lists of goods (per ship) received in Batavia, which were sent to the Republic and from which could be deduced to what extent the chambers had kept to the decisions taken by the Heren Zeventien on the dispatch of goods to Asia.
From this source (VOC 13493) the cargo list of the ship EILAND MAURITIUS (1346) had been copied. This ship sailed to Batavia in 1677 on behalf of the Delft chamber with the following cargo:
