Dr Maria Montessori Dr Maria Montessori was was in in in in in in many ways a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a woman ahead of of of her her time She was born in in in the the town of of Chiaravalle in in in the the Italian province of of Ancona in in 1870 Upon her graduation from medical school in in 1896 she became the first female physician in Italy Shortly afterwards she was chosen to represent the country at two different women’s conferences first in in in Berlin (1896) and then in in in London (1900) In her her her medical practice her her her clinical observations led her her her to analyze how children learn and she concluded that they build themselves from from what they find fin in in their environment Shifting her focus from from the the the body to to to the the mind she returned to to to the the university in in 1901 this time to to to study psychology and philosophy In 1904 she was made a a a a professor of of anthropology at the University of Rome Her desire to help children was so strong that in 1906 she gave up both her her university chair and her her medical practice to work with sixty young children of of working parents in in the San Lorenzo district of of Rome It became the first Casa dei Bambini or Children’s House More than a a a a a a generation has passed since the the year 1907 when the the name Montessori flashed like a a a a a comet across the sphere of education Dr Maria Montessori had a a a a a a a dream and hope that ours would be the century of of the child The passage of of time has made that dream a a a a a a a a reality 13 OBMC Parent & Student Handbook on E-learning
