Character Education is a values-based subject that helps the child become conscious of his manners, values, and moral and civic duties. The study of different religions and their traditions of faith develop in the child a respect for the differences of others. According to Dr. Maria Montessori, the parables are a good avenue to teach moral values and the basic tenets of spirituality.
Physical Education serves as a venue to channel the child’s irrepressible energy. This subject provides sports and physical exercises and activities that make use of the mental and physical power of the child. Indoor games such as chess, scrabble, table tennis, and futsal (indoor soccer) are taken up together with outdoor games like basketball and volleyball. Folk, classical, and ballroom dances are part of the program.
Scouting provides a venue to learn basic outdoor survival skills: knot tying, tent pitching, mapping, compass reading, orienteering, first aid, outdoor cooking, camping, and others. The OB Montessori Brotherhood of Scouts is programmed after Lord Baden Powell’s worldwide scouting movement.
Music and Arts teach the child to recognize musical symbols, read and sing notes using the Montessori bells, and compose single melodies and rhythmic patterns using the Pentagram. He learns the history of musical instruments, how to distinguish each sound, and how to play string and band instruments from the woodwind, brass, and percussion sections. The child also learns how to play the flute, bandurria, ukulele, and angklung. Theater Arts develop the student’s confidence in communicating character through movement. Art gives the student a better understanding of the elements and principles in creating shapes, images, and forms. It also helps him to develop an appreciation of cultural diversity.
Agriculture is a practical application of lessons learned in Botany and Zoology. It deals with the classification of the different kinds of plants, how to take care of them, and how to propagate them in different environments suitable for their growth. The care and raising of animals (quail, chickens, ducks) is also taken
