SCIENCE
Ms Callaghan
The World of Science is designed to give students an overview of the Sciences they can study at Leaving
Certificate level. This will help them to make informed subject choices and would benefit students in
third level career choice. The course intends to give the students a broader knowledge of biology,
chemistry, physics and agricultural science. They will develop an understanding of how the
fundamentals of science are applied in real life. It will broaden and develop student’s practical
knowledge of Science and highlight the modern role it plays in the Irish economy. The World of Science
will develop a curiosity for modern scientific applications and environmental issues surrounding
climate change, genetics and the biopharmaceutical industry. Theory and practice will be integrated
throughout the whole unit. Over the year students will develop skills of scientific analysis, research
and review and how to present their findings to the working group. This will develop the spirit of co-
operation, teamwork and sharing of information and resources. The World of Science encourages the
development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
