Globally, each year, an estimated 500 billion plastic bags are used. Trillions of plastic straws are used once, if at all, and discarded. Each minute, 1 million plastic bottles are bought. Millions of tons of plastic leach into the sea. Up to a 1000 years are needed for plastic waste to completely decompose in the environment. Meanwhile, marine life dies. At this rate, the oceans will have more plastic than fish by 2050.
The Mekong Delta and Vietnam are enjoying rapid economic growth, but alongside prosperity there is adverse environmental pollution. With more than 3000 km of coastline, the country discharges into the ocean every year up to 0.73 million tons
of plastic waste through its estuaries. Vietnam is now the planet’s fifth-largest marine polluter of plastic waste. Just twenty years ago, it barely relied on plastic packaging.
