Step Three. Return to your Cần Thơ table above, and note how the city and province can be a compelling alternative to ecotourism in other countries. Select four outstanding Cần Thơ locations that will form the basis of your extraordinary ecotourism experience. Recall the concept of POP from the Grade 10 Productive section in Chapter One. POP—personalize (P) outstanding (O) and powerful (P) learning—is not only compelling for narrating a story but also convincing in selling ecotourism to a prospective visiting tourist.

Rhetoric
Writing an Argumentative TBER with
emotions, and shared identity with others. And third, ethos is the authority, credibility, and trustworthiness of a speaker or writer. Aristotle argued long ago that one can convince others of an argument only if the speaker/writer communicates well to his or her audience in at least two of these three ways: logos, pathos, and ethos.
Step Four: Here is the trick. Good rhetoric begins by listening and observing your audience well. It does not begin by your own speech or writing. By paying attention to your audience, you begin to appreciate how you can reach another in a convincing and helpful way. Logos works well if you understand what another person needs to know in terms of facts and argument. Pathos touches other’s feelings through story and affinity so that you capture their attention. Ethos conveys authority so that your audience has reason to trust your knowledge, skills, and perspective.
Step One. As in Grade 10 of this chapter, so too here, students are asked to write a TBER paragraph of 130 to 150 words on ecotourism. Ensure that it is argumentative, a skill introduced in Grade 10.
Step Two. In addition, here you are to apply rhetoric
to your argument in the TBER paragraph. Rhetoric is a critical part of speech and written work, as well as essential for listening and reading well. The concept originates
with Greek philosophers. This section builds upon the work of Aristotle of Macedonia, a northern state of the ancient Greek empire. But this section is also as current
as the latest advertisement on television. Companies
use rhetoric daily to convince consumers to purchase
more goods and services. Moreover, you just completed
a Task on ecotourism. You may have a brilliant scheme
for ecotourism, but you will have no clients if you do not consider first how to communicate compellingly with prospective visitors and tourists. This how of effective and compelling communication is the art of rhetoric.
Step Three: There are three basic parts to good rhetorical communication. First, logos is your reliance on facts, science, logic, critical thinking, cause/effect, cost/
benefit, and comparison. Second, pathos is your sense of feelings, interest in human stories, common humanitarian
