Managing mistakes
Every time an athlete makes a mistake in a competitive event, their
mind will instantly focus on the outcome of the mistake (score for their opponents), and the possible consequences it may have (criticism from teammates, being substituted, self-criticism). Effective reinforcement from the coach can be a vital factor in helping them refocus on their performance. To manage mistakes effectively, distinguish between the types of mistakes and reinforce appropriately.
The type of mistake, the intent of the player and their opportunity to learn from the mistake are vital factors to consider when deciding on the type of feedback and the reinforcement impact. (Leeder 2022)
