faced in understanding the chants and learning the Dharma. In the following excerpts, Helen
and Steven shared their experiences regarding their issues:
“Language barrier is a challenge as well. Initially I didn’t understand the sutra chants
as I don’t understand Chinese. My friends asked me what is the point of chanting is
if I don’t understand the chants. I followed the pinyin (拼音). I learned by heart as
well. I already memorize the Xin Jing (心經) by heart. As long as I know this is what
I want, and I diligently go through it, I attend classes, somehow later on I will know.”
(Helen)
“Yes, there are many challenges. One of them is language. I do not know Chinese
but by using the faculty of hearing, I was able to learn the Dharma. I listened to Master
Hsing Yun’s talk many times so that I can understand what Master Hsing Yun is trying
to tell us. I have to put in more effort due to language barriers.” (Steven)
It is often the case that TCR followers who are not able to read and understand Mandarin
might find it challenging to chant prayers and scriptures in Mandarin. Based on the sharing
of Helen and Steven, they have put in much effort to overcome their limitations and showed
diligence in learning the prayers and teachings in their respective ways. Helen’s way of
making use of the pinyin (拼音) and memorizing the Xin Jing (心經) allows her to be able to
pray in the Buddhist way in the best way she could. Although she is questioned by her friends
in terms of whether she fully understands what she recites by heart, Helen is positive that
she will be able to fully comprehend the prayers in future due to her strong will and
determination. Similarly, Steven’s effort in repeatedly listening to Master Hsing Yun’s talk
helps him to better understand his teachings. Hence, the challenge of having to overcome
language barriers might seem intimidating for some people, but for Helen and Steven, they
strive to be able to fully participate in the Buddhist religious practices and are on the road to
achieve their aim due to their diligence and effort.
