  HISTORY...
Craft Wicker and Things Limited started in August 1986 under the stewardship of David and Joan Matalon. The company started operations on Norman Road in Kingston, where it produced wicker furniture such as chairs, tables, headboards etc. Craft Wicker and Things eventually moved its factory to Morant Bay, St. Thomas and enjoyed a profitable business in exporting its wicker furniture to both the United States and Trinidad. At their peak, Craft Wicker and Things employed in excess of 40 persons from Morant Bay and surrounding areas, which illustrates its positive impact on the parish's economy. However, production of wicker furniture came to a sudden halt in 1988, when hurricane Gilbert destroyed the island’s supply of wicker. During this time of uncertainty Craft Wicker and Things began manufacturing and selling children's swing sets while also sourcing and distributing Christmas promotional items for the purpose of advertising.
Craft Wicker and Things developed long-term client relationships with organizations such as the Cement Company of Jamaica, the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica, the University of the West Indies, the University of Technology, Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs among others. Craft Wicker and Things kept the “wicker” in the company’s name and moved the business to Swallowfield Road in 1995. Relocation to Kingston was prompted by the opportunity to take advantage of increased access to wholesalers at a time when the merchandising of trophies and awards grew for the company. David and Joan Matalon saw the opportunity to capitalize on new technology, such as computerized rotary and laser engraving equipment, that were not being utilized on the island. Craft Wicker and Things also saw the need for a wider variety of awards than what was currently available to the local market. The husband and wife team would regularly visit award shows where they formed relationships with manufacturers and were able to offer the local market newer and fresher awards of distinction.
