Roles
The teacher is expected to wear many hats during the SBA implementation period Hats such as ideator, approver, scheduler, assessor, and content specialist are just some of these hats Whilst each role is distinct, they are also symbiotic The roles are recognizably different in nature from each other For example, the role of an ideator is radically different from that of an assessor; the former requires creative thinking whereas the latter requires strict application of established rubrics else of a similar type The roles are symbiotic in that they all operate with- in the same assessment context and rely on each other to ensure the efficient and effective completion of the SBAs by the student cohort For example, the role of scheduler ensures that things, such as brainstorming (led by the ideator) and assessment (led by the assessor) hap- pens exactly when they should, neatly dovetailing with the other activities
In your role as scheduler, you will be required to develop a macro plan (overall plan showing all the assessment components for the exam year) and the associated schedules This plan must allow for the range of activities and ensure that they neatly dove-tail with each other Most importantly, the calendar must be structured in a way to allow time for each student to be interviewed at appropriate times We have lots of tips and tools in Section 2 Happy scheduling
As manager, in addition to the routine classroom tasks, you now are required to manage small groups You will have to oversee their formation, operation and assessment Section 3 contains guidelines that will help you to be a better manager
Whilst the role of assessor is not new, you are now required to plan do some things differently For example, you are required to assess process skills as well as affective learning outcomes In Section 4, we provide the orientation to the mindset, and we help to upgrade the skill sets required to assess these in a manner that consistently produces reliable results?
The rest of this book will help you to carry out the various roles effectively
