Above: Submarine Scout airship with an American ground handling crew. Note the U.S. star marking on the fin. By 1918 the U.S. presence was slowly making itself felt after the United States entered the war in April 1917.
Above: Rigid No.9 arrived at Cranwell on 15th October 1917 to give airship pilots some experience on rigid airships. Unfortunately she was compelled to land at Howden (Yorks) on 29th October and was damaged while being walked into the hangar there. She did not return to Cranwell, her place being taken by Rigid No.25.
Below: Staff Officers of the Lighter Than Air Section photographed with American naval cadets who arrived at Cranwell in November 1917 to begin training as airship pilots.
