Sample Chickamauga Battlefield &
Chattanooga Military Park Itinerary
Known at the time as the
“Gateway of the Deep South”,
Chattanooga was an important,
and pivotal, point of strategy for
both Union and Confederate
forces. In September 1863,
Confederate forces were
successful in defending
Chickamauga. However, as
fighting continued, the Union
was able to successfully capture
nearby Chattanooga, signing
what some Confederate Soldiers
referred to “The Death Knell of
The Confederacy”. At
Chickamauga National
Battlefield, Rangers will lead
your students through a
detailed tour of the pivotal Battle
of Chickamauga, and your
students will gain a deeper
understanding of the military
strategy and the significance of
these battles in the Union’s
capture of the South. A picnic
lunch, overlooking the
battlefield, will give students
plenty of time to enjoy the
beautiful scenery that our
National Park System
maintains.
