Lesson 27
The photo shows the keyboard instrument which is
called a harpsichord. It was the main keyboard
instruments used before the invention of the piano, it
was used during the 18th-century and many European
composers wrote a lot of music for this instrument.
You will notice from the photo that this harpsichord
has two manuals, each manual produces a slightly
different sound. Many harpsichords have three sets of
strings and by using the strings in different ways it is
possible to produce different sounds from the
instrument.
The period of European music where the harpsichord
was mainly used is called the Baroque Period, and the
three main composers of that time were Handel, Bach
