was a time when reeds were very plentiful in east
Anglia where I live. The thatch material is in fact dried
reeds and much of the land here was covered with
reeds.
That has now changed, there is very little area given
over to reeds as they used to grow wild in very wet
land. The land has now been drained and is used for
agricultural purposes for growing crops like wheat,
oats and barley.
You will also notice from the photo there is a bird
which has been made from thatch that is attached to
the apex of the roof. This is a very common feature on
thatched roofs and the men who do the thatching
pride themselves on having different types of
thatched birds in their work.
