Exhaling is a
more passive process,
where the
diaphragm
raises back
up, the ribs
return to
place and
carbon
dioxide is
squeezed out
of the lungs
and out of the airway.
Normal effective breathing is essential to maintaining life. A person who is gasping or breathing abnormally and is nonresponsive require immediate resuscitation.
The vital sign used to monitor a casualty’s respiration is the ‘respiratory rate’. An abnormal respiratory rate may indicate the onset of serious clinical events

16-20 breaths per minute
Child
16-30 breaths per minute
Infant
25-40 breaths per minute
