Remember always prioritise yourself first. If you get injured there may be no one else left to provide assistance.
Look for danger to:
• Yourself, the Rescuer
• Bystanders
• The Casualty themselves.
Two further dangers that must be considered at this point are the dangers from cross infection and any severe bleeding that may be present.
Infection
There are many forms of infection that we need to protect ourselves from when providing medical assistance. Most people fear the transmission of serious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis. Whilst these are justified concerns, other infections such as the flu and general
viruses are also a risk.
As we can never be sure
that a casualty does not
have a transmissible
infection, Standard
Precautions are to be used
at all times. The standard
precautions that are
required are listed below.
• Treat all blood and body fluid as though it is contaminated.
