DANGER
For you, others and the casualty, checking for danger is always the first step....
Rushing in to an incident
without regard to safety
can add to the number of
casualty’s. Potential
dangers surround us all
the time. Whether you
work in a factory, are
driving home from work or
are at home there is always a possibility of injury from the many hazards that we encounter in our everyday lives.
During a medical emergency it is essential that the first responder take a moment to identify any hazards and either eliminate or control the hazards prior to providing assistance. Failure to do so may result in further injuries to the casualty or the first responders themselves.
When identifying dangers take 5 seconds to ask yourself these three simple questions.
1. What hazards are present? What could have happened to the casualty and could that happen to me?
2. Is there anything that could cause further injury to anyone?
3. Are there any other people in immediate danger?
