neutral position whilst you do this as tilting the head may cause the casualty to inhale and choke on the contents.
2. Opening the Airway
Open the casualty’s airway by tilting the head rearward (a full tilt). Do this by lifting the chin and pushing back on the forehead. DO NOT LIFT UNDER THE NECK.
Children will only require a 1⁄2 head tilt and infants (babies) heads must not be tilted. Their head and spine must be left in the neutral position.
BREATHING
Once you have cleared and opened the airway, place your hand on the diaphragm and your ear in front of the casualty’s mouth to “Look, Listen and Feel” for signs of breathing.
Breathing can be identified by the following techniques.
• Feeling for breathing by placing your hand on the casualty’s diaphragm.
• Placing your ear next to the casualty’s mouth and listening for breathing.
• Place the back of your hand over the casualty’s mouth and feel for breathing.
