If the chest does not rise, check for the following:
• You have the correct head tilt and jaw support to ensure that
the airway is open.
• Check the airway for obstruction
• Ensure that you have an adequate seal and ventilation is
sufficient for the casualty.
After inflating the lungs you will see movement in the upper abdomen area as the diaphragm distorts. When this occurs you have inflated the lungs sufficiently. Lift your mouth from the person's mouth, turn your head towards their chest and listen and feel for air being exhaled from the mouth and nose. Once exhaled you can repeat the cycle for a second breath before returning to compressions.
*Note. It is important to limit the time taken to provide rescue breaths and return to compressions as soon as the two breaths are delivered minimizing disruption to the compressions.
Infection Control During Rescue Breathing
When delivering Rescue Breaths it is
advisable to use a protective device such as a
Facemask or Resuscitation Shield when
available to reduce the possibility of
infection transmission. Where suitable protection is not available
