Mouth to Mask
Mouth to mask resuscitation is a method of rescue breathing which avoids mouth-to-mouth contact by the use of a resuscitation
facemask.
It uses the same
techniques as in mouth
to mouth, however
rather than placing the
rescuers mouth on the
casualty’s the rescuer
will place the face
mask over the
casualty’s entire face
and blow into the
mouthpiece of the
facemask. Most
facemasks will also have a one-way valve that will direct expirations of the casualty away from the rescuers face.
Regardless of whether a facemask is used or not, normal airway management must be maintained with sufficient head tilt. See the ‘Airway’ section
