Asystole (aka flat line)
With this rhythm there is no viable electrical activity within the heart and as such a shock will have no effect. If the defibrillator detects this rhythm it will advise that the rescuer continues CPR. Asystole is not a shockable rhythm.
VF (Ventricular Fibrillation)
When a heart is in VF the electrical activity within the heart itself is disrupted. If a defibrillator identifies a VF rhythm it will recommend a shock in an effort to reset the electrical activity and restore a normal rhythm. VF is a shockable rhythm.
