The Respiratory rate is usually expressed as a number of breaths per minute e.g. the casualty’s respiratory rate was 16 breaths per minute.
Level of consciousness
It is important to continually monitor the consciousness level of the casualty. Their level of response to the following can determine their level of consciousness:
Voice (fully conscious) Touch
Pain
Nothing (unconscious)
A good method of determining the conscious state is to use the COWS acronym listed below.
C Can you hear me?
Ask the casualty if they can hear you.
O Open your eyes.
Ask the casualty to open their eyes W What is your name?
Ask the casualty what their name is. S Open your eyes.
Ask the casualty to open their eyes.
