ENERGY DRINKS
IT GIVES US CONCERNS
-Dr. Shawn Washington
In an attempt to stay alert in a world filled with endless activities, con- sumers are drinking energy drinks at an increasing amount. Red Bull one of the largest manufacturers, reported annual sales of $4 billion world- wide for 2018, while Monster sales totaled $4.43 billion. The 2017 global energy drink market was estimated at $44.5 billion with an expectation to increase in size by 7.3% in 2026[1]. As market demand increases, we see more cases of emergency room visits and accidental deaths related to the consumption of this beverage.
One of the first energy drinks (“EDs”) to the market was Red Bull. The formula created in Thailand by Chaleo Yoovidhya contained mostly different types of sugars and caffeine. On a visit to Thailand, Dietrich Mateschitz, founder of Red Bull, discovered that the drink helped him with his jet lag. He was so impressed with this Thailand version that he decided to bring the drink to the Western states and market it under the same clashing red bulls backdropped against the rising sun symbol. In a joint business relationship with Yoovidhya, his efforts were successful.
Americans are the largest consumers of energy drinks. Annual Reports and market indices suggest an increase in sales over the next few years.
