to work with and I work hard. I will never take off from the set because it isn’t going my way. Each director I have worked with has given me my praise and sent my name forward for new work and connections. I am truly humble. It is never going to leave me, but I know when to cut that off as necessary.
I took note from my personal research that the talent was a fan of Jordan Peele so I asked:
If Jordan Peele called you up and asked what type of character do I need to make for you, what would you tell him? I wouldn’t care! I will be the monster or the en- emy. People keep asking me about hero roles, but if I could be the bad guy I would Heath Ledger that thang! I like challenges and the chance to show that sort of range.
He is truly a laid-back guy and I found myself feel- ing as if I was catching up with an old friend who had respectfully been too busy to chat. He dropped several gems as far as making your way into the acting world and reminding me that a good personality, willingness, and hard work can really make the difference when it comes down to the wire.
Gurie: During QOTS an interesting thing happened between the scenes. I found out I was related to Nikki Dixon. She heard me say my name and she got on the phone with her mom making the connections while they were calling her for a scene. Eventually, after a Facebook tagging spree, we discovered that we were re- lated and backtracked all the way to our family link. She had a principal role and has become a big motivator for me. I have made good friends with many of the lead characters and easily made enemies because after the family relation was known I ended up with more cam- era time. Including the fact I worked hard. It turned into some animosity because I was really laid back and waited my turn; I was never in the way or demanding speaking opportunities or overly expectant of camera time.
The beauty for me in this story is the six degrees of separa- tion between us. Gurie and I even know some of the same models and photographers here in Texas. This made me happy. The stars do tend to align!
He isn’t’ stopping anytime soon and his plans of action do not only include his own future. Gurie has landed a high-profile deal that also included his daughter. He called it one of the prouder moments of his life and that he can’t wait to have the same opportunity to work with his son. When I asked how she did he laughed and said, “she was a natural!” Look for this father daughter duo in print commercial and on billboards for United Way!
Gurie says he is actively working to secure a commercial with his son as well. Shout out to fathers! They matter! In addition to his role in Queen of the South, Gurie is staying busy with a few other projects. He is the main character, Chris, on a web series that is coming soon called, “Krayons”. The storyline has several twists and turns, and he is not only acting but playing a big part in the production as well. As mentioned before, he is no stranger to background work and has no intentions to be just an actor. The commitment to his personal brand and the projects he has been a part of show in his track record and his ever-expanding resume. As we continued to talk, he explained how he was starting to see familiar faces and people that he had only held brief interactions with that where now coming back around as castmates for full productions. On top of being in the scene and behind the scenes of his movies, his star power was booked for a Frito’s commercial that will be airing throughout this NFL season. This is a true wavemaker and as time goes on, I believe him to become a household name. And so you know, its Gurie, pronounced Guy-ree. Say hi if you get lucky enough to see him!
Gurie’s advice; “Never be afraid to be uncomfortable. Some- times you have to get uncomfortable to get comfortable and that is the only way you will find something new.”
Chase the highest mountains!
