Q & A with
BUCK JOHNSON
Q & A
Your new album Tongue and Groove is now out!
What has the response been like, and how do you
feel about sharing this project with the world?
The response has been amazing, and I always
keep my expectations low on how any project will
be received. I try to focus on the work and how it
makes me feel, and I trust the people I work with
in the creative process too. This gives me the
confidence to share the album with the world. I
want the world to hear these songs and my
singing.
How has touring with legends like Aerosmith, The
Hollywood Vampires, and Ringo Starr influenced
your work on Tongue and Groove?
There’s no doubt when one is fortunate to work
with musical legends that it makes you better. I PHOTOGRAPHY CREDIT: JODI CUNNINGHAM
soak it all in to learn as much as I can. I listen and
watch. And I think all the artists and musicians
that I’ve been blessed to work with, whether
they’re known or not, have influenced me. I
believe that’s how you grow and evolve as an
artist. We share, give, and take from each other,
whether it’s with writing, recording, touring, or
performing.
The collaboration on “Just Feel Better” with Steven
Tyler and Carlos Santana was iconic. How did that PHOTOGRAPHY CREDIT: JODI CUNNINGHAM
shape your career as a musician and songwriter?
It gave me more confidence that I could make a
living as a songwriter and to keep collaborating,
as was with the creation of Just Feel Better
(written with Jamie Houston and Damon
Johnson).
