In a home filled with warmth and
gospel records, Grafton Howard first
discovered the sound of heaven. His
mother often played Mahalia Jackson,
whose spirit-saturated voice stirred
something deep within him. That voice,
both holy and human, shaped the way
Grafton understood music — not just
as sound, but as presence.
Born in Wahiawa, Hawaii, and raised in
Virginia, his early years were marked
by movement, melody, and divine
purpose. After the family’s relocation,
destiny introduced him to Rev. Clifton
McDonald, a young preacher who
recognized the spark of calling in him
and placed him behind the drums in
his gospel group. That moment fused
