       Availability of health centres as per the strength of population in
       rural areas

                                                   Subcentre (SC)
           This is the first level health contact centre for rural people. There is one subcentre for
           every 5000 population.( 3000-Hilly areas)

                                      Primary health Care Centre(PHC)
           A Primary Health centre acts as a referral centre for 6 subcentre. There is one PHC
           for every 30000 population.( 20000-Hilly areas) These provide outpatient services
           and majority have 4 to 6 inpatient beds

                                      Community Health Centre (CHC)
           Community Health Centreis the 1st referral unit for 4 PHC. According to norms
           every CHC(for 1 lakh population) should have 30 beds, 1 OT, X ray machine, labour
           room staffed by 4 specialists

                                                   Rural Hospitals
           These include subdistrict hospitals called as Sub-divisional /Taluk/Speciality hospitals

        Speciality and teaching hospitals which are roughly 300 in India are situate in major
        cities.
