The office of the Ombudsman was set up under Redressal of Public Grievance
Rules, 1998 framed by the Central Government. The rules apply to all the operating
Insurance companies. The objective is to resolve all complaints relating to settlement
of claim on the part of Insurancecompanies in a cost effective, efficient and impartial
manner. The rules stipulate the formation of a governing body of the Insurance
Council, which shall consist of one representative from each of the Insurance
companies.
The governing body shall appoint Ombudsman for these purpose. Any person,
who has a grievance against an insurer, may complain to the Ombudsman
within whose jurisdiction the branch/office of the insurer is located. The
Ombudsman may make a recommendation through mediation, or pass an
award.

a. District forum: Value of services and compensation claimed does not exceed 20
lakhs
b. State commission : Value of services and compensation claimed if exceeds Rs.20
lakhs but does not exceed Rs.1 crore
c. National commission : Value of services and compensation claimed if exceeds
Rs.1 crore
