of the package included in the premium charged for
many classes of insurance. The most notable
example is engineering insurance where the major
part of the premium relates to the provision of
inspection services to comply with the Factories Acts
and other statutory safety regulations.
Although for other classes of insurance, inspection
of premises, plant, systems of work, etc may be
carried out primarily to provide insurers with
information they need for underwriting purposes.
Insurance surveyors are also an important
independent source of advisors. Sometimes the
provision or continuation of insurance cover is
conditional upon surveyor's recommendations.
Insurers providing engineering insurance have
extended their service to cover nondestructive testing
of plants and materials, the inspection of second-
hand plant prior to purchase, advice on plant
installations, testing and commissioning of new
plant, etc.
