How to respond When considering how a child or young person can be supported to ‘recover’ from problematic alcohol and/or drug use, assessments such as the DUST (Drug Use Screening Tool) can be utilised to identify a range of both risk and protective factors that can impede and support recovery respectively. The DUST is used as a brief intervention in itself, allowing the young person and worker to consider a multitude of factors from: their drug/ alcohol use, their social situation (school/ training/ accommodation/ supportive relationships), psychological health and physical health. It is recognised that identifying any protective factors can indicate a level of support and resilience for the young person.
