8.3 Consumer Education and Communication

AGM
A short discussion took place during which members noted the
following:
- The budget for 2019/2020 should be presented to the National
Council.
- Progress made with the statutory application will be reported.
- The verified sow numbers will be confirmed.
- The venue is fully booked.
- The theme for the symposium is “Shift towards an intelligent and
data-driven future”.
- A detailed programme will be sent to all National Council
members.

Fire and Feast
The meeting noted that Fire and Feast takes place from 6 to 8
September. Derick van der Walt has to advertise it in the electronic
mails, newsletters, etc. This is a costly operation from which the
industry may not necessarily benefit. SAPPO and some abbatoirs
were working together to reduce the cost.

ALFA Expo 2019
SAPPO was invited to participate at the ALFA Expo 2019 in Parys.
Marieta Human was attending to it and might conduct small in-store
demos for people to taste pork.

Digital communication
The members noted that the digital articles most frequently clicked
on related to ASF. SAPPO’s electronic information is viewed far more
often than the average for electronic media. The engagement with
small-scale farmers via electronic media was very good.

8.4 Research and Development

Carcass classification
The carcass classification project had passed the halfway mark in
terms of the number of carcasses selected and dissected.
