The industry has a protocol and they have to adhere to that
protocol.
7.2 Woolworths J Kotzé, M Human
A visit to a farm must be scheduled to expose retailers to the
compartmentalisation system.
7.3 Free-roaming pigs – Eastern Cape J Kotzé, Dr Evans
Dr Peter Evans confirmed that the problem posed by free-roaming
pigs would will always be there. There are many by-laws that are
not adhered to. Socio-economic, cultural and other factors also
contribute to the problem.
Interaction took place with state veterinarians in this regard and
several attempts were made to solve the problem. In Gauteng a
facility was built to house the pigs but the residents were opposed
to it. The pigs were kept where they wanted to build a house. It is a
part of their culture to keep pigs. In certain cases pig keepers were
informed of the risk and they agreed to replace the pigs with cattle.
This is an ongoing concern. People should realise that the pigs pose
a risk/threat. A way should be found to mitigate the problem.
He encouraged all pork producers to focus on biosecurity to protect
the herd.
Lungelo Bhengu suggested that SAPPO / state veterinarians should
explain the risk of feral pigs to traditional leaders in the various areas.
They could be asked to speak to the community, who would be
more receptive to what the leaders say. A solution might be found.
Decision:
SAPPO must talk to the traditional leaders in the various areas in an
attempt to find a solution to the risk posed by feral pigs. EB 17/2019-
