             RESEARCH PROJECTS

             •     The Committee had a meeting on 27  June 2019.  The new contract is
                                                                 th
                   still to be signed with Stellenbosch University to fund a research project
                   titled “Improving the Livelihood  of Pig  Farmers  of Commages  in  Rural
                   Areas in the Western Cape”.  A progress report on the project has been
                   received  despite  the fact  that the contract  is outstanding  and no
                   payment has been made.  The matter was referred to the dean of the

                   faculty.
             •     Carcass  classification:  The last 12 carcasses  were  selected at  Lynca
                   Meats in Meyerton on the 30  September.  They will be delivered to Irene
                                                     th
                   on 1  October and dissected by the 4 . Subsequently, data analysis will
                                                                 th
                        st
                   commence and, according to Dr Phillip Strydom, a final report is to be
                   expected not later than the end of November.
             •     The contract for partial funding of a study on “The prevalence,
                   perceptions  and mitigation of antimicrobial resistance  in pig  farms  of
                   Gauteng province and surroundings in South Africa” at the University of
                   Pretoria (Onderstepoort) is in the process of signing.

             •     A request for partial funding from Dr Juanita van Heerden of the ARC at
                   Onderstepoort on a study “The risk of ASF to Gauteng” was approved.
                   The contract signed by SAPPO was submitted and is awaiting a signature
                   from ARC’s CEO,

             •     A bursary application of Mr Jan Mostert was withdrawn after consultation
                   with his study leader.   A  more elaborate  study titled: “Optimising the
                   digestibility  of pig finisher  ration by  reducing maize particle size and
                   including sunflower oilcake” will be tabled at the next meeting.  This study
                   will possibly also only be funded partially.


             Additional Research committee member
             Prof  Esté Van Marle-Köster  accepted an  invitation  to  serve on SAPPO’s
             Research committee. Her contributions to this committee is expected to be of
             great importance.
